# What uses credits

> Credits pay for one thing: the AI's work on your videos. Here is what costs credits, what does not, and what happens when they run out.

## What costs credits, and what does not

| Uses credits | Free of credits |
|---|---|
| Montage making your first version | Adding footage, and getting it ready |
| Every change you ask for in **Ask** | Watching your video |
| **Fix all**, which sends your comments to Montage | Writing comments |
| | Going back to a line of the History |
| | Exporting |

What a message costs is what the AI's work on it really cost: one credit is 5 cents of it. A first video costs about 3 credits; a small change, less than one.

## The AI model changes the cost

| Model | In the app |
|---|---|
| **Haiku** | A quick change, for little |
| **Sonnet** | The right change, for most |
| **Opus** | The most care, for hard changes. « Opus may use more credits » |

Sonnet makes a video's first version unless you pick another; Haiku makes the changes after. On Free, Haiku makes everything. Before you start a video, the box shows what it should cost: « About 3 credits ». [Choose the AI model](/docs/edit/model).

## See what you have left

Open **Plan and credits**: it shows your plan, when it renews, and « 120 credits left » with a bar.

- Your plan's credits come every month, on the day it renews. What is left of a month does not carry over.
- Credits you buy are used once your plan's credits run out, and kept 12 months.

## When credits run out

A message Montage has already started goes to its end: you are never charged below zero. The next message is not started, and Montage says « You're out of credits for now. Add some in Plan and credits, and I'll pick up right where we left off. »

1. Open **Plan and credits** and press **Buy credits**.
1. Pick 50 credits ($15), 100 ($30) or 200 ($60).
1. Press **Buy … credits** and pay. Back in Montage: « Thank you. Your credits arrive in a moment. »

> On Free, once your free credits are used up, your video is safe and **Export** still exports it, with the Montage mark.
