Every tool
Every tool Montage's MCP server gives your AI, with its options and what it answers.
Pro plan and above. On Free or Plus every tool answers « Montage MCP is on the Pro plan and above », with the address to change plan. Download and upload addresses last 4 hours.
Videos
| Tool | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|
list_videos |
none | The workspace’s videos, most recent first: id, name, shape (tall, square, wide), length in frames, frames a second. |
create_video |
name (1–120 characters), shape optional: tall, square or wide |
Makes a new, empty video and answers its id. With no shape, Montage chooses. |
Footage
| Tool | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|
list_media |
none | The workspace’s footage, sounds and pictures, newest first: id, name, kind, status (uploading, converting, listening, ready, failed), length, size, pace, whether its words are known. |
get_media |
media_id |
Where one file stands, with its progress while it is made. Follow an import with it until it is ready. |
import_from_url |
url (http or https), name optional |
Montage fetches the file at that address (a direct link, or a share link that leads to the file), keeps it as the original and makes it. Answers its media id. |
start_upload |
file_name with its extension, size in bytes (up to 5 GB) |
For a file on the computer the AI runs on: answers a media id, an upload address and the curl command that sends the file. |
finish_upload |
media_id |
Says the file is up; Montage makes it. |
import_on_computer |
path: the file’s full path on the person’s computer |
Asks the person’s Montage app for Mac (open, signed in) to make the file there; the original stays where it is. Answers a job id. The job waits a day for the app. |
get_job |
job_id |
Where a job given to the app stands: waiting (no app open), working with its progress, done (the media id, or the file’s path and size), or failed and why. |
add_media_to_video |
video_id, media_ids (1–100) |
Gives footage to a video, so its files can use it. |
Export
| Tool | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|
export_video |
video_id; made_on: montage (default) or computer. On Montage: kind video, sound or edit; quality smaller, standard (default) or best.On the computer: settings, below. |
Exports the video as it is now. On Montage: an MP4 (H.264), the sound alone (WAV), or a ZIP for Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve. On the computer: the person’s app makes it from the originals and saves it in their Movies folder. On the Free plan the export carries Montage’s mark. |
get_export |
export_id |
Where an export stands. Made on Montage: its progress, then a download address, the file’s name and size. Made on the computer: as get_job, with the file’s path. |
The settings of an export made on the computer (each one optional; what is left out is the video’s own size and pace, H.264 in MP4, Standard, normal colours, AAC):

The video’s files
These are the tools Montage’s own AI uses, by the same names. Each takes the video_id first and works in the video’s folder, /workspace. Each write is a version of the video the person sees at once.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
read, ls, find, grep |
Read the video’s files and the footage given to it. |
write, edit, delete |
Change the video’s files: main.mc.js, components/, chapters/. |
exec |
Runs a command on a Linux machine with Python and ffmpeg. A file it writes under out/ becomes footage of this video. |
Read-only: media/<id>/ (each file’s details.json, takes.txt, contact sheets sheet-<n>.jpg, poster.jpg) and comments.json, the comments people left.
Questions
In which order should my AI call them?
List or create a video; import footage and follow it with get_media until it is ready; add_media_to_video; write the video’s files; export_video, then get_export.
How does my AI know how to write a video?
When it connects, Montage’s server gives it the same text Montage’s own AI reads: what a video’s files are and how they are written.
What does « waiting » mean on a job?
No Montage app for Mac has taken it: none is open and signed in. It waits a day.
