YouTube Shorts length:
how long can a Short be?
A YouTube Short can be up to three minutes long, as long as it's vertical or square. Here are the rules, checked on YouTube's own page, and how long yours should be, on three real Shorts.

In this post9 parts
The short answer.
Ladies and gentlemen, let's start with the answer, because that's what you came for.
The YouTube Shorts length limit is three minutes. Up to three minutes, as long as the video is vertical or square. That's it. A 2:30 video filmed upright on your phone is a Short. A 2:30 video in 16:9 is not, and never will be.
Now, can is one question. Should is another. So in this one: the rules, checked on YouTube's own page, and then how long yours should be, shown on three real Shorts of mine at 0:38, 0:56 and 2:07. If you want the edit itself, that's in how to edit a short, edit by edit.
The clock says three minutes. The shape decides first.
The YouTube Shorts length rules, in one table.
Here's everything YouTube says decides whether a video is a Short, in one place. Every line comes from YouTube's help page « Understand three-minute YouTube Shorts », unless it says otherwise.
| The rule | |
|---|---|
| Longest | 3 minutes |
| Shortest | No minimum: YouTube's page sets a maximum, not a minimum |
| Shape | Vertical or square. A wider shape, like 16:9, is never a Short |
| Upload date | On or after October 15, 2024 (standard channels); December 8, 2025 for Official Artist Channels. Older videos stay long-form |
| How to upload | The YouTube app or YouTube Studio |
| Copyright, over 1 minute | Any active copyright claim blocks the Short worldwide |
| Music | Most Shorts Audio Library songs: up to 90 seconds in a 3-minute Short. Some tracks: only 60 or 30 |
| Royalty-free music | The YouTube Audio Library's royalty-free tracks get no Content ID claim |
| Edit into a Short | Takes up to 60 seconds of your own video (YouTube's help) |
Let's be clear about one thing, because some pages that rank get it wrong: the music limit is not « 60 seconds with any song ». For most library songs it's 90. And a vertical frame in full HD is 1080 × 1920, tall, not 1920 × 1080. That one is wide. The TikTok aspect ratio guide has the sizes in full.
What makes a video a Short.
So what does YouTube actually look at? Two things. The length and the shape.
The length: up to three minutes
It wasn't always three. Before September 2024, Shorts were capped at 60 seconds, and the very first beta, in India in 2020, took vertical videos up to 30 seconds (Wikipedia). Then YouTube moved the limit to three minutes, for videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024.
That date matters. A two-minute vertical video you uploaded in the summer of 2024 is still a long video. Uploading it again today is what would make it a Short.
The shape: vertical or square
Here's the thing: the shape decides before the clock does. A vertical or square video of three minutes or less is a Short. A wide one, at any length, is a regular video. Even at 20 seconds.
That's why the frame matters more than people think. If you want to know what changes when the frame stands up, it's its own topic. And if you already have the video wide, you can make the same video in a tall size for Shorts.
Music and copyright past one minute.
Now, this is the part that can sink a long Short.
Under one minute, nothing changed. Over one minute, YouTube's page is strict: if your Short has an active copyright claim of any kind, it's blocked worldwide. Not playable, not recommended, not monetized. Your channel isn't penalized, but the video is gone for everyone.
And the music? Most songs in the Shorts Audio Library can play for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short. Some only for 60 or 30. If you want music under the whole thing, the YouTube Audio Library's royalty-free tracks don't get a Content ID claim.
Past one minute, one claim and the Short is gone.
So if your Short runs long, check the music before you upload. Every time.
How long should your Short be?
So should you use all three minutes? Let me explain.
There's no official best length. YouTube's page tells you the maximum and nothing else. The number you'll see quoted most comes from Adobe Express: in its survey, creators named under 30 seconds as the best length for views, shares, click-throughs and saves. That's what creators think works, not a measure of views. Worth knowing. Not a rule.
What I can show you is three real Shorts, all 9:16, at three points on the scale. And what each length took to fill.
0:38 and 0:56: one idea, one hook
Edit it all with AI is 38 seconds. It's an ad: a hook made as a component, the site dropping in, one line of captions at a time. Way too curious is 56 seconds: one photo drops in for each thing I love, and that idea carries it to the end.
ComponentsThe hook: a white Instagram reply, made as a component and reused. Click to watch it on its own.
CaptionsOne line at a time, white on the take, dark on the white stage.
B-rollI say CrossFit, my photo drops in. One picture for each thing I love.At this length, one idea is enough. What it needs is a hook in the first seconds, so nobody scrolls before the idea lands.
2:07: something new every time the topic changes
How to be creative is 2 minutes and 7 seconds. Before October 15, 2024, it couldn't have been a Short at all. Today, by YouTube's rule, it would count as one.
But two minutes is long on a phone. So the picture keeps changing. When I talk about the book, it cuts to the book. Then the notebook. Then the whiteboard. When I walk around the room, the frame follows me. And the notebook shots, filmed from above and upside down, were turned the right way up.
B-rollWhile I talk, it cuts to the right shot: the book, the notebook, the whiteboard.
TrackingLocked on me: Montage tracks me as I walk around the room.
RotateThe notebook shots were filmed from above, upside down. Montage turned them the right way up.Do you see the difference? The 38-second one lives on one hook. The 2:07 one needs something new on screen each time the topic moves. That's what B-roll that keeps a longer Short moving is for.
A longer Short isn't harder to make. It's harder to fill.
So here's my opinion: cut it to the length the idea needs. Not one second more. And if it's past a minute, give the eye something new every time the topic changes.
Keeping a video out of Shorts.
Now the reverse question: what if you don't want it to be a Short?
YouTube's own advice: use a wider ratio, like 16:9. That's it. A wide video is never classed as a Short, whatever its length.
My film From Disney star to space CEO is 9 minutes and 18 seconds, in 16:9. A regular YouTube video, all the way. My face cam sits in a macOS window, over the James Webb images, on every one of its 216 cuts.
So if you're making a long video and a vertical cut from it, keep them in their own shapes. Tall for the Short, wide for the video. For turning a long video into Shorts, there's a guide of its own.
Cutting yours to length.
Okay. You know the limit, and you know how long you want it. How do you get there?
In a timeline editor, you trim by hand until the counter reads what you want. In Montage, you say it. « Cut it to under a minute, keep the best take of each line. » « Make it 9:16. » The length and the size are part of what you ask for, like anything else in the edit.

Then you watch it, and comment on what's wrong. If you make a lot of these, here's an editor for Reels and Shorts.
